Emergency Exit Lighting Illuminates A Path to Safety

Emergency lighting systems have been shown to save countless lives. Internal backup batteries allow them to activate when a building’s power goes out.

Federal, state, and local building codes have required emergency lighting systems for more than 50 years. Emergency lighting fixtures must:

  1. Be evaluated and approved by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

  2. Receive a UL 924 testing standard listing for emergency devices.

These lights are hard-wired into a building’s AC power system (supplying a constant charge for exit pathway illumination) and installed throughout corridors, stairwells, and rooms.

Emergency situations and power outages demand specialized fixtures that ensure a safe, efficient route for building occupants and emergency responders.

Emergency Exit Sign Types & Materials

Emergency exit lights should be built of the most durable materials and should ideally be waterproof and fire resistant. Our most popular sign uses red or green LEDs for brilliant, constant lighting.

LED exit signs are available in the following materials:

  • Thermoplastic

  • Aluminum

  • Fiberglass

  • Edge-lit models

Thermoplastic emergency lights are a low-cost choice suitable for most indoor commercial use. They are flame-resistant up to 176ºF, easy to mount, and use either 120v or 277v AC electrical power.

Steel emergency lights work well for industrial use and can be configured in a variety of battery (up to 400 watts) and lamp head combinations. Using a large battery with remote lamp heads means upkeep of only one battery, which reduces cost. Similar models are available in waterproof, vandal-resistant polycarbonate housing.

Aesthetic Style of Emergency Exit Lights

Emergency exit signs and emergency lights are vital for every business. They are designed to direct and illuminate a safe path of egress in case of a power outage, fire, or other emergency.

We offer an assortment of styles including:

  • Classic

  • Modern

  • Contemporary

  • Art deco

  • And more

Most designs use modern LED lights that conserve energy and provide other benefits such as:

  • Consuming less than five watts of electricity

  • Enduring for up to 10 years

  • Producing less heat

  • Small backup batteries sustain illumination during power outages

  • Push button for easy testing of internal backup battery

When deciding which LED model to buy, business owners should consider application environment, desired aesthetic, and lighting goals.

A New Focus for Fire Safety

The focus of traditional emergency lighting and exit signs has been to guide a building’s occupants to the nearest exit in an emergency.

Today, emphasis is placed on not only getting occupants to a building’s exit, but also on directing them to and along a path of safety once they are outside.

The NFPA 101 Life Safety Code requires emergency illumination of the path of egress leading away from a building (exit discharge) to a public way. The safe public area is described as a street, alley, or other similar parcel of land that is:

  • Open to the outside

  • Dedicated for public use

  • A clear width and height

OSHA also requires clearly marked emergency illumination to be in place, in working order, and tested at regular intervals.
